The Iliad, Topic 5

What connections do you see between our world and the world of the ancient Greeks and Trojans?

  1. i think the connections between our world today and the ancient worlds are all of the fighting and lying. today we fight with people and we say we are doing it for one reason that benifits everyone but we acctually only do it for our own selfish reasons just like agamemnon saying hed fight for helen but he just wants to take over troy.

  2. the connection i see is that like the ancient world our world is always fighting. everytime you turn around someone else is pissed off at another person and they are fighting.

  3. today, a lot of people put their lives in the hands of higher beings like the greeks did with the gods. we also go to extremes to be with the people that we love. our family is also very important like the families for the greeks.

  4. The connections that I can see through todays world and the ancient world would be...that guys believe they are more superior than women. They believe that any man can achieve a goal better than a female. Another connection would be that we are still in "battle" with ones across the sea and fighting for our freedom, when Helen launched 1000 ships for her beauty. There is a desire that people have that they will not give up until they have accomplished their goal. Americans now a days are stubborn just like the ancient greeks were.

  5. connections i see between the ancient greeks and trojans and our world today are people fight for there country. They assemble by the masses to protect there countrys and do what is asked from them. They are idealists just like many places today.

  6. How we wage war against people for stealing our property, whether it be land, money, or other treasures. We hold grudges against these people and don't rest until we are payed in reparations to account for our suffering. But it's not like everyone wants war, in the instance where Paris challenges Menelaus for Helen directly instead of in war there was much rejoicing that they would not have to battle and instead could solve the war and the problem of Helen all at once.

  7. The connection that I see between our world and that of the ancient Greeks and Trojans is the value of God. In either world there is some form of god, which they worship and go to in their time of need. Although in the world of the ancient Greeks and Trojans they had many gods that upheld the role of different powers, it is essentially the same concept. It doesn’t matter what god you “worship”, they are still there. Another connection that I see is the hunger for control, shown through wars and the poor treatment of others.

  8. There are several connections between our world and the world of the ancient Greeks and Trojans. First of all, we are in an ongoing state of war. Secondly, our wars take a long time to end. For example, America has been involved in the Middle East for almost 2 decades. Sometimes these wars are about people and prisoners, like how Paris took Helen from the Greeks and brought her to Troy. Likewise, people in our world fight to take back POW and other captured people, like how there are some American reporters stuck in North Korea.

  10. the connection that i see between our world and the world of the ancient Greeks and Trojans is that there is still war between country. so that mean that if you compare them with us is going end up in the same thing death, blood , and innocent people will suffer ,lost of love one.

  13. what strikes me most about the decisions that hectror makes is just the lack of common sence he useds in his judgement. for example, his mothers pleads with him not to go because she knows that he is going to his death, and he basically agrees with her; he knows that he is going to his death and he knows he will die but he still goes anyway. to be honest it makes me lose alittle faith in Hector beacuse he is stupid. i think that the the people of that time put alot on honor. if they were not honorable then they were a disgrace. humanity has drifted away from that. for example when they used the draft in WWII almost everyone that was able went. people were volunteering in masses. but if you look at vietnam, some people would have rather left the country, given up their citizenship, and never been allowed back to the united states before they were drafted. to the acient greeks and trojans honor was everything. so even if you knew for a fact. if you knew 100% you were going to die...you went anyway. no quesions asked because it was better to go to your death than not be honorable.

  14. Hector acts very noble in his return to Troy. He doesn't fool around, trying to flee battle like Paris. Rather, he is very honorable in his quest. He deals with what is dealt to him, and knows he cannot change the fact that there is fighting. Therefore, he is acting rightly in delegating praying to Athena to his mother and the other noble women in Troy. In their culture, it would make very much sense to not back out of battle and to honor the gods and ask them for help/pity. Hector's mother acts rightly in eventually supporting her son, for in their culture women should respect men. Also, i can see how she would feel the need to first plead with Hector to not fight, for she is his mother. After raising him, she would feel guilty if he died and she did nothing to prevent it. If I was Hector's mother in this situation, I would do everything I could to get a loved one out of battle. I would be completely stubborn in their attempts to justify sacrificing their life because I would never want to lose someone close to me in such a terrible and greusome way.

Hector also acts rightly when he goes to find Paris. Hector is fully justified when he scolds Paris for retreating back to Troy and escaping the war. Paris, claiming he is too grief-stricken to participate in battle, deserves to have someone tell him how it is; that Paris is being a coward, yet again. Paris, on the other hand, acts as a terrible Trojan fighter. This is the second time he backed out of a battle. In their culture, he should be considered very dishonorable and selfish for not fighting in a war he helped start. However, I can see his struggle with risking his life in such a bloody battle. I myself would not want to enter a war like teh Trojan War.

  15. When Hector was talking to his mother he makes the right choice in acting noble. She was try to convince Hector to stop fight even though he is the protector of the people, all for her selfishness. But instead of trying to reason with his mother; Hector gave her a list of things to do to help him survive and get her mind of the war. One such thing was to gather all of the elderly women and pay to athena, who didn't listen, for his and his people's safty.
Even though Hector was Noble his mother wasn't because in her selfishness she tryed to get her son drunk so he wouldn't leave her side. In the end after Hector orders she just turn her back to hector with out saying a word and went to work.

  16. Hector and his mother seen to have a good relationship with each other and can count on one another to help when it’s needed. Hector thinks that it’s the right thing to do to persuade Athena into helping them win the war and save Troy. His mother is obviously going to help her sons in any way that she can. So she is sent to Athena to plead with her. Hector believes that it’s his fate to save Troy and find his brother to help their beloved city. I think that Hector’s mother was right to ask him to stop fighting, because of all the terror they instill on their people, and those around them. If I were them I would probably do the same thing.

  17. In response to the Book 6 worsksheet, the human side of these characters is very interesting to explore. For example, when Paris is up in his room trying on his armor instead of fighting along side Hector, it shows fear. These men who seem so strong and untouchable do have human flaws such as fear and loneliness.
As far as Hector's mother and wife asking him to stop speaking, they are right. They love and care about him and want to see him leave a long and fruitful life. But, it is Hector's job as a warrior to fight for his country, and they shouldn't tell him something he has a passion for is bad for him because it's his life and his choice. If I was them, I would have done the same and tried to have an intervention-type thing. But, I'd also respect his decision to stay fighting as a warrior because I'd know it was his job and his passion.

  18. The human side of these characters is that they all have fear. Which is a strong character trait for humans. I do agree with the decisions, and if I were Hector's mother, I would ask Hector to stop fighting too.

  23. But really, Jared, I like how you pointed out that Hector's mother tried to get him drunk in order to get him to stop from going back to battle... I don't believe this was apparent in my version of the text, and it is good to know that bit of information.

  24. I agree 100% with everything Lauren said. I can tell she put alot of work into her response, and it makes alot of sense. So great work Lauren! and I completely concur with the entire thing.

  25. Thank you but when you write "After raising him, she would feel guilty if he died and she did nothing to prevent it" she not going to feel guilty she just doesn't know what she'll do with herself if she losses he first born son.
