  1. Paris is the character that i think is admirable becuase is a brave soul. i think is a man very admirable because he will sacrafice his life for other....

  2. The character that i think is most admirable in the story is Paris(Alexandrus) because in the story he basically described as a god, very strong, and always looking for a big challenage to defeat. Even though he would agree to anything somebody said about him that was bad, he still wouldnt care. Which makes his character admirable.

  3. I think that the heroes that we seen are: Paris for fighting for what he wanted. Hector for standing up for his brother. Menelaus for not killing Helen and for leaving her not love him and just follow him where ever he goes. And the one that I think was one of the best heroes is Clytemnestra for killing Agamemnon, he killed her daughter and he raped Helen a lot of times so I think that was the right choice.

  4. I think Aphfordite is admirable because of the power that she has. She was able to convience Helen to go to her husband with a sense of fear. Aphordite is a very strong and powerful god and doesn't take kindly to being told no and lashed at by a mortal, even if she is the daughter of Zeus.

  5. Hector is the most admirable. He's only in this war because he was attacked. If the Greeks new came to his door step he probably whould have never even killed a greek in his life.

  6. I really do not believe that there is an admirable character in the Illiad. All the characters contain bad flaws that one would not want to have. If I had to chose anyone for an inspiration in this story, I would either say menelaus or Agamemnon. Menelaus steps up to battle Paris when the Greeks get a challenge called out to them showing that he is powerful and is not afraid to fight for what he wants in life. He is superior and a great king, and someone who may frighten others that are not so great. Agamemnon may be an inspiration because he is powerful, and frightens the rest of the people that are the Trojans. Agamemnon has the intensity in his eyes that would make people run for the hills. His confidence and ego he presents for himself shows he can defeat anyone that he would want too. Since Agamemnon knows what he wants, he will fight til the death with anyone to get to his destination and goal. For one to carry himself in sucha manner is an inspiration to others to present themself in the appropriate manner in a certain sitaution.

  7. I think that out of all of the characters, Hector and Menelaus are most admirable. I find Hector admirable because of his bravery and leadership skills. He seems a little cocky and full of himself occasionally, but overlooking this, he's a morally good character. I find Menelaus admirable because he loves Helen, and his passion for this love drives him to destroy his enemies to get Helen back.

  8. I believe that Hera is admirable. In the sexist world of the gods, she is a goddess who fights against the men who belittle women. When Zeus returns to Olympus from his meeting with Thetis, Hera doesn't hesitate to let her husband know she is upset with him. I admire her courage to stand up to the most powerful god because she voices her opinion against his superiority. This also sends a message to other goddesses that although they do not have much power over the gods, they can communicate their feelings. I also admire how Hera is unafraid of Zeus. Even though he can hurt Hera, she steps up and expresses her anger toward his flirtatious and sneaky decision-making with Thetis.

  9. i think that only two characters are admirable in the entire book. granted they both have their flaws but they are the most admirable out of all of them. the first is achilles. most people dont think that achilles is an admirable person because he is a war monger. but if you look at what he does in book 1 it shows is admirable triats. He refuses to fight and makes agamemnon do the right thing and return the preists daughter. then refuses to fight when agamamenon takes away his lover. in my opinion that is one of the most admirable things he does. the second character who i think is the most admirable out of all of them is hector. hector seems like the real hero of the story. he is strong, smart, and just a good warrior. he only does whats right for his country and ends up sacrificing his life to save his brother (according to the movie). sacrificing your life for a coward who probably deserves to die is definatly an admirable thing if you ask me.

  10. I think that Menelaus is the most admirable in this book so far. Even though he is a king and he is surrounded by bad things and bad people 24/7, he still holds his own beliefs and does stand up for himself when the time is right. He stands up and decides to fight Paris which is extremely brave and admirable. When Paris challenged a Greek to a fight because Paris was trying to be tough and conceited, Menelaus stepped up to the plate and took control. He wanted to remain in his place and gain power and respect.

  11. I think that Helen is admirable because she is so unbelievably strong. When the Greeks were fighting Troy, she was the start of the battle. Who would win the most beautiful daughter of Zeus? A warrior of Troy, or a warrior of Greece? Helen knew that she was to marry Menelaus of Greece, but she loved Paris of Troy. Though she was a woman, who at the time was the weaker sex, she still stood up for her love and stayed with Paris until his death. When her sister went crazy and her family was slaughtered, she continued to walk the battlefields and be there for the warriors who needed her the most. She was the star of Greece, and when she moved to Troy for Paris, the glow she had moved with her. When she lost all hope and thought that she would lose it all, she held her head high and tried her hardest to make sure there was a positive outcome for her and her nation. Helen was so strong and is truly an inspiration to women who think they can't make a difference.

  12. I find that Paris is very admirable and in the long run is a good guy. In the movie he actually cared for Helen unlike all the other leaders of the nations. The kings of the other nations saw her as an object or possession rather than a woman. They didn’t care for her beauty or anything of the sorts. Only Paris did. He liked her for her being beauty and kindness.

Another character I find to be admirable is Hector because he stood up for his brother when he wasn’t able to fight for troy. He lost his life defending his family and his home.

  13. I believe that Menelaeus is the most admirable character in the Iliad. Unlike his brother Agamemnon he is not greatly motivated by his pride, greed, and rage. He is instead motivated by love. He truly loves Helen; just as much as Paris and Helen love eachother. I also consider Paris and Helen immoral though. Although it is true that they do actually love eachother their is no getting around the fact that they are commiting adultery. Furthermore when Helen ran away with Helen she did not just leave behind her husband she also left behind her children which is terrible.

  14. To me, Hector is the most admirable character so far in The Iliad. Hector is a courageous Trojan soldier and is also very keen; he is a good leader for the Trojan army and he knows his place. His bravery on and off the battlefield is part of the reason why Troy is such a powerful empire. He is the one of offered advice and motivation to Paris before his fight against Menelaus.

  15. Hector is the only admirable character in the entire story. He's a man of honor, fighting to defend his home. He's not fighting for wealth or power, or even Helen, he's fighting to protect his home and his family, he's motivated by his duty and his love for his family, where everyone else is motivated by lust, passion and greed.

  16. I think that helen is admirable because she is the most beautiful woman to all the men, and they all lust for her, but she is also very strong because even through all the hard times she had she kept her head high not letting anyone really see what she was feeling. She never lost her love for paris even when he died, which made her stronger because she still

  17. i think the most admerable person in the book is menalaus. the reason for this is because he is fightingfor a cause that is actually dear to him and not to take a loot for his own greed. he just wants his wife back and he is willing to fight for that bravley.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that the most admerable character in book III was Meanalus.the reason why is becasue he is fighting for a god cause and was very brave unlike paris who was scared to fight him.

  19. Paris and Helen are so different from the movie version to the book. In the movie Helen and Paris are shown as wealthy people having a good life and Paris is brave in each battle he fights. But in the book Helen and Paris are shown as cowards because Paris is affrid to fight any one and olny fight Menalaous because his brother, Hector, tells Paris that he is a disgrace to tyhe Trojans and that he should have never been born. And Helen on the other hand gives into the fear of the Goddess Venus because she would not love her any more and that she would make the war worse and Helen would have a terribale end.

  20. In the movie Helen of Troy, the characters were different from Book 3, The lliad. For example in the movie Paris was very strong and brave, but the book makes him seem like his a warrior that is very cowardly. Also the character Hector in the movie seems like brave person, and would do anything for Troy. In book 3, Hector seems like mean kind of person, but is still strong and will stand up for Troy, unlike Paris.

  21. I think that out of all of the characters, Hector and Menelaus are most admirable. I find Hector is the admirable one because of his bravery courage, and leading skills. He seems a snotty and stuck up now and then he's a morally good character. I find Menelaus loves Helen,he loves her so much he will do what ever he can do to have her.he will fight all of the enemys and do what ever it takes to win her back.

  22. I find Achilles the admirable because he doesn't care he fights for himself. He his ruthless and doesnt't care about anyone.

  23. hector, seems he is the most admirable one out of all the character in this wretched story are only fuled by hate and greed. espicially Agamemnon, he is the cruelest out of all the characters in this story, he only wants pain for everyone and only fights for himself. these two characters are oppistie from each other and im using agamemnon as an example...to be continued

  24. Agamemon is different to the movie than from the book, because Agamemon thinks his a powerful king, only cares about himself and what he is fighting for. In the book, Agamemon acts alittle different because he seems weak, afraid. When his brother gets hit, Agamemon cries and knows that his brother is going to die and tells the Trojans that they can keep Helen. Which is a whole different story in the movie.

  26. Hectors mother in a sense knows honor and genuine emotions because she is in a family that is surrounded by honor and continual emotional battle that take a continual toll on her as well as the rest of the family. Paris and helen both know nobility because they are both from royal families in a sense. A lot of the posts by everyone else on previous topics have reasoning and proof behind what they have written, on the other hand some of the comments have nothing to do with what the topic asked for.

  27. In Book 6, I believe that the most admirable character would be hector. He is brave and full of spirit. He wants to fight for the trojans and he wont let anyone else stop him from hid duty. Hector is limited to who he reacts with and how he goes about communication. When he is talking to Paris (his brother) he is very disgusted and dishonored by him because Paris was sitting in the house with the women and Helen away from the war instead of fighting. there communication would be yelling at one another and trying to get the point across that they should all be fighting for each other. Hector believes that his brother is doing the wrong thing by hiding from the war. So therefore he believes he has to go out and fight since some men that are suppose to be "brave" are hiding from the terror. Hector is very noble character and should be honored for his thoughts and what he has his mind is set too. After Hector had explained to Paris that he should be fighting since this war is based upon him and Helen, paris set out to fight a little after Hector had ran into his wife. I believe that Hector and the others made the right choice to fight. If they did not fight then they would lose alot of men, lose their land and be looked at as cowards. I believe that Hector's wife and mother were just scared and had the urge to tell Hector to stop fighting. The mother did not want to lose her noble son in this type of battle. And hector's wife had lost her father and mother, so she thinks that while hector is fighting he will never return to her and his son. She is more scared of becoming a widow and having her child grow up without a father. Even though they both knew that nothing could stop Hector from fighting against the people that he did not like the most. So Hecotr knew that there was achance of him not returning so he picked up his son and called to Zues and told him to have his son be more noble than him, have him be the strongest and most powerful man than he has ever been. if i had been Hectors wife, I would have known that he was not going to stop figthing and that there was no escape to being in the mist of the troulbe. I would be scared to know that its possibly that my husband would not return to me but he would die in the duty of keeping me and the son safe. This whole "wanting to fight" is for the title of being noble, of having the praise that one should have while putting their life on the line. This war is not based upon Hector but he knows that he has to fight, and be brave for the trojans. Come out as a leader and to go in with the mind set of victory.

  28. I do have to say that Menaluas is the most admirable character in the illiad. Menalaus constantly lives in the shadow of his brother and unlike Agamemnon, Menalaus does not use the morals of sexism, pride, and rage. Menalaus uses his love and kindness as a more profound quality to show compassion towards helen among others. He shows rare qualities in his actions, especially in those times of aechaen hatred towards trojans.

  29. Hector and his mother had a genuine moment with their sense of honor when he stands up for his nation. He says “Don’t offer me mellow wine, mother, not now- you’d sap my limbs, I’d lose my nerve for war.” This is honorable because he didn’t want to stand around and do nothing. Instead he wanted to stand with his men and fight. I believe that his decision to want to go fight is bad because he has a wife and a child to watch out for. If he dies there is nothing to support his family. During this time women didn’t have much say in what happened. Therefore if he died, his wife and child would be helpless. But, if was in his position I would stand and fight with my men. I would want to do the honorable action and stand up for something important.

  30. When Hector finds Paris and calls him a dog and a coward he shows how angry he is towards Paris. He shows his love and compassion for his homeland of Troy. Paris tries to tell his brother that he knows he's a coward and that he's not hiding out of anger or outrage but out of grief. I think what Paris is saying here is that he's ashamed of how he betrayed Troy by bringing the nation into a battle not wanted by many. Helen feels bad that this is partly her fault so she tries to satisfy Hector by offering him to sit next to her and try to calm him down.

  31. When Hector returns to his mother, he tells her to go to the shrines of Zeus and Athena to make offerings in order to get the god’s favor closer to their side. She offers her some wine but he refuses it because he knows that he has to return to battle, and the wine would make him weak. He believes that the god’s are in favor of the enemy, and because of that they are fated to lose; however despite knowing that they will lose Hector refuses to give up fighting. This shows he has great determination even in the face of likely failure.
Hector’s wife, Andromache, also wishes him to stop battle. She also believes that Hector is fated to lose. For this reason she wishes him to leave battle so that he will not be killed. She is thinking of her son. She also knows that she will not live well if he dies in battle.

  32. I think that Hector and his mother have a caring relationship. They look out for each other. She wants him to stay safe and take care of himself first. She does not like that he is fighting but it is something that Hector wants her to except. He is determined to try and save Troy from the Greeks and he is trying to save Paris from getting killed. Being the older brother he has great responsibility. I think that Hector is doing the right thing because he has a “game plan.” He knows what he is doing and wants to help as much as he can. I think that I would do the same thing that Hector plans on doing because I always put my family first and I think that Hector is noble and honored fairly.

  33. At first hector is courageous and brave when he returns to troy, and goes to his mother and tells her to pray to athena for the defeat of diomedes. then hector finds paris sitting in his room polishing his armor which proves his is scared to fight because instead of getting ready to fight he is procrastinating. Then hector yells at him agian, and paris agrees that he is a coward and tells hector that he is going to battle, proving that he still is a human and has fear.

  34. The interaction between Hector and his mother on pg. 204-205 and Andromache on pg. 209-212 were genuine moments where neither woman wanted him to go back into battle, knowing that he would not come back alive. But he had to fight for his country because he was the Trojan’s greatest warrior. Hector showed a great amount of courage and bravery to go from a safe place back into the field. I believe it was the right decision by Hector to be able to leave his loved ones for war, even though his heart is telling him to stay, he can overcome that because he must fight for his country.

I don’t think the two women were right to ask him not to go into battle. All of the men are expected to fight for their country, and Hector specifically because he is the Prince. He is induced to live out a life, no matter how long, of heroics and the glory that could come with it. He does not attain that goal by sitting back and watching others die in front of him. This is what he basically tells Paris, who at first is not fighting, but yet again is convinced by Hector and others to fight.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hector's mother tries to convince Hector to stop fighting. She offers him rest and win to drink, as to refresh himself. She feels he deserves rest after his long battles and relaxation for once. Hector refuses this offer, because he cannot let himself become comfortable while he may need to go back out into battle. He also feels it unjust to pour drinks to the Gods while covered in blood and dirt. He feels his fate is to fight, and that those who don't fight need to be praying to the Gods. He asks his mother to go pray while he goes back out to war, because it is who he is and what he does. When he confront Paris and Helen, he is outraged by their insolence. Paris is laying in a room with Helen and several women, essentially hiding from the war, and Helen is accepting it, and even trying to convince Hector to stay. Though they both insult themselves, Paris calling himself a coward and Helen calling herself a whore, they don't change anything. They contradict their words by continuing to be cowardly and naive. Hector is disgusted with their actions. He tells Helen to stop trying to persuade him, and convince Paris to join the fight, because it is their duty. When Hector finds his wife, Adromache, she is filled with grief. She wants him to stop fighting, because if he dies, she loses everything, and so does their baby boy. She fears for his death, and is looking at the long run of the situation, desiring to have him forever. Hector tells her how even if he wanted to stop fighting, he could not. He knows that someday Priam and all Trojan warriors will fall. It is his fate and his honor to fight until the day he dies.

  36. In book six of The Iliad, Hector and Paris show many emotions. At first Hector is courageous and brave when he returns to Troy, and goes to his mother and tells her to pray to Athena for the defeat of Diomedes. Then when Hector goes to Paris’ room, and finds him polishing his armor instead of fighting, he yells and belittles Paris. Paris admits that he is a coward and swears that he’s on his way to battle, which shows his human side, that he is afraid. Hector then goes to his wife, who begs him not to go to battle, and to think of her and their son. He responds by saying "All this weighs on my mind too, dear woman. But I would die of shame to face the men of Troy and the Trojan women trailing their long robes
If I would shrink from battle now, a coward." Lines 523-525. He tries to remain strong and brave by trying to cheer up his wife.

  38. I really dont agree with anyone that says helen is the most admirable person in the book. She portrays herself as a coward, and knows that what she has done is wrong. I dont see why someone would want to admire a woman whom may be so beautiful but has called herself a whore and a bitch. She has not brought anything good to this book. Good for her if she has all the men after her, but she is not the strongest of all people and not in the mind set to accomplish her goal. She's not comparible to Hector, because she has flaws that he does not have. He is brave, strong, courageous, a great leader and is family orientated. All she has done was brought shame to herself, and troubles to the trojans/argives.

  39. "I find that Paris is very admirable and in the long run is a good guy....Only Paris did. He liked her for her being beauty and kindness."
Bryant, your dumb, Paris is never a good guy, he's afraid to fight his own battle, which he started out of lust. He proclaims his love for Helen, but he won't step onto the battlefield to protect her. He loved her for her beauty? so did every other man in the Achean Army. Grow up and Bstl.

  40. I agree with Tyler Grant that Menelaus is one of the most admirable characters in the book. His morals are in place, as he doesn't actually do anything wrong. Menelaus only desires to have Helen back, because she is truly his wife. He does not drive on greed or rage like Agamemnon does. If he was given Helen, and it was his choice, he would have left Troy, but Agamemnon was leading the war, and thus Menelaus lost control.

  41. i agree with zac, if paris loves helen then why would he sit in the house with all the women and not fight for her treasures and her in general? Paris is a whimp and would never be the most admirable person. maybe if bryant read the book....he would realize that Paris is far from admirable.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I completely agree with tygrant in that Menelaus is the most admirable of the characters. He is the only character who never did anything wrong and who never acted dishonorably.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't agree with anyone who thought Paris was the most admirable character in the book (Bryant). He is constantly shown to be the most cowardly man in the book. Not only does he steal away Helen from Menelaus and the Greeks, but when a war erupts because of it, he sits back in grief and watches his men die before him. He should be the one on the battlefield if he really loves Helen and wants to defend her. He needs to be criticized by his brother for him to muster up enough courage. Paris is single handedly the reason for Troy’s downfall. Hector is the real hero.

Bryant should not get credit unless he actually reads the book.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree with Brooke's comment on how Helen is not admirable. She thinks herself a whore of babylon and has done things for only herself. She put an entire nation back to war just because of how she felt towards Paris. People dying just because of her love is not brave, it's cowardly to run away from the fighting and run off with someone else.

  47. I do not agree with anyone that thinks paris is admirable, because he is a coward. He wants to back away from a fight with Menelaus and he has to be yelled at and belittled to make him fight. He even owns up to being a coward and admits it. Even though he does fight he gets help from a god, and after goes back to his room and shines his armor instead of going out to battle.

    ReplyDelete
  48. even if hector doesnt win its because paris is a loser and doesnt help his men or brother fight.
so your dumb bryant and you shouldnt be defending somebody that will never even earn up to hector.

    ReplyDelete
  49. the only reason why hector would loser is because paris is sitting in the house with the girls. he isnt out there fighting. maybe you would do the same thing as paris so thats why you admire him the most bryant. but, i believe alot of people would side with zac, devon and myself. because paris is nothing but a loser.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I dont agree with anyone who thinks that paris is an admirable because instead of fighting with the Trojans, Paris is up in his room shining his armor. Paris even admits to Hector that he is a coward and that he's afraid to go to battle. Another example of this is when he goes to fight Menelaus, but onece he sees Menelaus he shinks back into the Trojan troops. Hector is the one who gets Paris to go and fight both times by yelling at him and belittling him.

  51. i do not agree with evelyn mejia becasue she states in the first sentence that paris and Helen both enjoy a good life, but in truth Helen does not lead a good life in the movie becasue she is always shown as a damsel in distress as she is passed from man to man always hoping to win her hand in marriage. she is forced to leave with thesaus and then made to marry menalaus on a cointoss. Also helen does not cower down to Venus but instead aphrodite. know the gods

    ReplyDelete
  52. Devon i agree with your opinion.. you make a good point when you said that Hector doesn't sit back and watch others fight for him. He is the one to do the fighting because he knows that the city of Troy has already given him so much and he feels like he has to some how pay Troy back. It is only fair. I think that is another reason why he is a noble and honorable hero.

  53. Bryant, you've never read this book, we're all right when we say Paris is a wuss who deserves to die, even Homer believes Paris is a coward, when he shows Hector,(my boy) telling Paris how it is.
